Military chiefs warned Cameron against
using 70,000 ‘moderate’ rebels figure . . .

Ministry of Defence (MoD) bosses warned Prime Minister David Cameron against claiming there are 70,000 moderate Syrian rebels ready to fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), fearing the assertion would echo Tony Blair’s Iraq “dodgy dossier.”

The revelation comes after the House of Commons voted to extend airstrikes from Iraq into Syria, with the first bombs falling hours later.

According to the Times newspaper, military figures also feared Cameron’s claim of such a rebel force may lead MPs to wrongly believe there was a ready-made army on the ground in Syria, therefore influencing the vote.

This led to concerns in the upper echelons of the military establishment that such a claim would later become the Syria war’s “dodgy dossier,” echoing Tony Blair’s now debunked 2003 claims that Saddam Hussein’s regime could launch weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes.

“There were Ministry of Defence officials who maybe felt scarred after the previous dossier,” a senior Whitehall source told the Times.

“They looked at the latest text and said that [the 70,000 figure] could become the ‘45 minutes’ moment of this document.

“The concern was … [that the 70,000 figure] will become the one thing that everyone latches on to, like the 45 minutes claim.”

Some of the most vocal critics of Cameron’s claim were among his own party.

During the ten-hour debate on Wednesday, Julian Lewis, Tory chairman of the influential Defence Select Committee, told MPs: “Instead of having dodgy dossiers, we now have bogus battalions of moderate fighters.”

"Tanya beliau.

Speaking to Sky News on Thursday, Lewis said: “Where are these magical 70,000 people and if they are there fighting, how come they haven’t been able to roll back ISIL/Daesh?”

“Is it that they’re in the wrong place? Is it that they’re fighting each other? Or is it that in reality they’re not all that moderate and that there are a lot of jihadists among them?” he asked.

It is conflict and military intervention that fuel arms sales, and companies like BAE are only too happy to cash in from it. These companies don’t care who uses their weapons or the damage they cause, the only thing they care about is profit.”

Prime Minister David Cameron warned on Thursday that British military action in Syria will be complex and take a long time.

“This is going to take time. It is complex and it is difficult what we are asking our pilots to do, and our thoughts should be with them and their families as they commence this important work,” he added.

On Wednesday evening British bombers hit seven IS targets in eastern Syria, including oil fields used to supply the terror group with vital funds.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said the airstrikes had dealt IS “a real blow,” and added that British planes would not initially be targeting urban areas like Raqqa.

“I can confirm that four British Tornados were in action after the vote last night attacking oil fields in eastern Syria – the Omar oil fields – from which the Daesh (IS) terrorists receive a huge part of their revenue.”

“This strikes a very real blow at the oil and the revenue on which the Daesh terrorists depend,” he told the BBC.

Syrian state media says British airstrikes are illegal

Syrian state media outlets claim the British parliament’s decision to extend airstrikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) from Iraq into Syria is in contravention of international law.

The claims come a day after MPs voted to bomb targets within the war-torn country and hours after the first sorties hit an oilfield in the east of the country.

The Independent reported that the Al-Baath newspaper – which reportedly answers to President Bashar Assad’s own party – said Prime Minister David Cameron was running a “PR campaign” in support of a “US-led show in violation of the UN charter.”

Analisis menunjukkan "serangan berjaya," tuntutan Kementerian Pertahanan (MoD).

Al-Thawra, another official newspaper, said Cameron and the House of Commons vaulted “over international legitimacy as usual.”

British politics is still reeling from the decision in parliament last night to extend airstrikes to Syria.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon claimed on Thursday that RAF bombing raids against IS in Syria have dealt “a real blow” to the financing of the terror group.

Analysis indicates “the strikes were successful,” the Ministry of Defence (MoD) claimed.

Fallon told the BBC he had approved the targets before the House of Commons vote on Wednesday evening, and gave permission for the raids to go ahead once MPs had rubberstamped extending airstrikes.

He added that airstrikes against extremists are likely to continue for years.

“This is not going to be quick,” he said.

RAF strikes targets in Syria after parliament votes to bomb ISIS . . .

In a 397-223 vote, British MPs have voted to extend airstrikes against Islamic State into Syria. Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn spoke passionately in support of the move, defying Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and backing the plan of PM David Cameron.

After a tumultuous day of impassioned debate, the motion to extend airstrikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). Some 67 Labour MPs voted in favor of the strikes, swinging the vote in the government’s favor.

Hours after the vote, RAF jets carried out their first airstrikes on Syrian territory, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said early Thursday. He refused to give details of the specific sites targeted.

Earlier in the evening, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said raids could begin “very quickly” because jets are already stationed in the Middle East where they are carrying out attacks in Iraq.

Among the standout speeches in the course of the mammoth 10 hour debate was Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn’s closing remarks, which called on MPs to act following the atrocities in Paris last month.

The “carnage” in Paris “brought home the present danger” to the UK and fostered the need to act against the extremists, he said, because it could have been and “could still be” a British city.

Benn added it is Britain’s “moral and practical” duty to extend airstrikes into Syria.

The result will be welcomed by Prime Minister David Cameron, who previously pledged to only hold a vote once he was guaranteed the support of parliament.

However, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has suffered an embarrassing defeat, with 67 of his own MPs voting against him. He was forced by a rebellious shadow cabinet to allow his party to hold a free vote.

Still, the majority of Labour MPs – 153 – and 16 members of the Shadow Cabinet supported Corbyn in his case against launching Britain’s new overseas bombing campaign. Fifty-three MPs from the Scottish National Party (SNP) also cast “No” votes, along with three Social Democratic and Labour Party MPs. Others opposing the motion were two Liberal Democrats, two Plaid Cymru MPs, and one Green MP.

Earlier on Wednesday a spokesperson for the Corbyn camp said they expected to lose the vote, but claimed the government had “lost the argument.”

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said airstrikes would ultimately pave the way for a battle on the ground, which he said is the only way to defeat IS.

“Airstrikes alone will not finish ISIL,” he said “but they will over time degrade ISIL and force a change in its behavior.”

Hammond said a ground assault will be needed in the end to oust ISIL from its Raqqa stronghold.

“Ultimately there will need to be a ground assault on Raqqa,” he said. “That will come in months or perhaps years.”

The vote on Wednesday evening was met with anti-war protests throughout the UK, with demonstrators in London staging a “die-in” outside the Houses of Parliament that blocked roads and brought traffic to a standstill.
