‘Lie of the Year’ prize goes to Obama
It’s probably not the kind of recognition he wanted to receive, but President Barack Obama has been awarded PolitiFact’s “Lie of the Year” for 2013.
The infamous prize, handed out annually by the fact-checking website PolitiFact, was given to Obama because of his statements claiming that Americans would be able to keep their health insurance under the Affordable Care Act if they liked their plan.
“If you like your health care plan, you can keep it,” Obama said on numerous occasions over the years. Soon after cancellation notices began arriving in American mailboxes this fall – more than four million people have seen their coverage cancelled at this point, largely due to the fact that their coverage did not reach the ACA’s minimum requirements – Obama denied that such a promise was made, saying he actually meant that plans could be kept only if they hadn’t changed since the health care law was passed.
Obama’s explanation didn’t pass muster, however, especially since he’d been captured on video promising that health care plans would stay in place at least two dozen times. Facing public backlash, Obama apologized and unveiled a one-year plan to allow insurers keep selling existing plans that are about to be cancelled.
“We weren't as clear as we needed to be, in terms of the changes that were taking place, and I want to do everything we can to make sure that people are finding themselves in a good position," Obama said in a November interview with NBC News. "I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation, based on assurances they got from me.”
Since his promise was deemed false, the president’s approval ratings have declined sharply. Larry Sabato of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia told PolitiFact that Obama’s credibility can be restored over time with effective implementation of the law, but that he faces a significant challenge.
“A whole series of presidents developed credibility gaps, because people didn’t trust what they were saying anymore,” he said. “Once you lose the trust of a substantial part of the American public, how do you get it back?”
Once again, the ACA dominated PolitiFact’s fact-checking efforts. This is the fourth time in the past five years that a quote related to the law has won Lie of the Year, and the website’s Reader’s Poll results were no exception. Fifty-nine percent agreed that Obama’s statement took the top prize, but the next three runner-ups were from the law's opponents.
In second place was Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for his statement that Congress was exempt from the ACA. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) came in third place for her allegation that the IRS would keep “a national database” of Americans’ health care secrets, and conservative commentator Ann Coulter took fourth for asserting that no U.S.-trained doctor would accept Obamacare.
Overall, seven out of the 10 lies selected by PolitiFact’s readers were related to the ACA.

Drone membunuh 15 Orang‘Yang menghadiri
majlis PERKAHWINAN’ di Yaman . . .
Drone strike kills 15 'wedding party goers' in Yemen
Fifteen people who had been heading to a wedding in Yemen have been killed in an air strike. Local media reported that a drone attack had been responsible, and the party-goers had been hit instead of an Al-Qaeda convoy.
“An air strike missed its target and hit a wedding car convoy, ten people were killed immediately and another five who were injured died after being admitted to the hospital,” a Yemeni security official told Reuters.
Five more people were injured in the attack which took place in Radda, central al-Bayda province on Thursday, the source added.
The group had been en route to the the village of Qaifa, the site of the wedding, when it was hit. The assault left charred bodies strewn in the road and vehicles on fire, officials told AP.
While officials would not identify the source of the air strike, local and tribal media sources attributed the deaths to a drone attack.
No comment followed as to whose drone may have delivered the strike. However, the US is known for its counter-terrorism assistance to the country which at times includes UAV raids.
Washington has recently increased the intensity of its drone strikes in Yemen, despite widespread criticism sparked by the fact that strikes are far from being ‘surgical’.
In October, Human Rights Watch released a damning report on US drone strikes in Yemen. It described six of the total of some 80 targeted killing operations in the country. In those six attacks 82 people were killed, 57 of whom – or practically 70 percent – were civilians.
“President Obama says the US is doing its utmost to protect civilians from harm in these strikes. Yet in the six cases we examined, at least two were a clear violation of the laws of war,” HRW Senior Researcher Letta Tayler commented at the time.
In the same month, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counterterrorism, Ben Emmerson, said that US drone strikes had killed 2,200 in Pakistan in the past decade, 400 of whom were civilians and another 200 ‘probable non-combatants’. Pakistan is another country, where the local population vehemently opposes American drone strikes.
"There are many, many examples of civilians - women, children, older people - being killed by these drones," anti-drone activist Leah Bolger told RT in an interview.
And even if the drones attack the people that the CIA intends to attack, this is outside the judicial process, and these are illegal attacks. They violate the sovereignty of Yemen, of Pakistan, Afghanistan. Even if the person attacked is a bona fide member of Al-Qaeda, until they can be proven to have done something that is against the law, these are extrajudicial assassinations."

In addition to the high civilian casualty rates, critics say drone strikes are done in violation of international law, and question whether the Obama administration has the authority to sanction the killings without a court warrant.
One particular practice denounced by human rights activists is the use of so-called ‘signature strikes’, in which a drone attack is given a go based not on identification of known Al-Qaeda fighters, but on the behavior of people.
In practice, drone pilots may attack any males, who look old enough and are armed. Considering that people living in tribal areas of Afghanistan, Pakistan or Yemen have a long tradition of carrying personal weapons as a sign of manhood, ‘signature strikes’ are prone to kill many civilians, critics say.
Yemen is considered to be the Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)’s main foothold of what is deemed the most active wing of the militant network.
Critics maintain that the drone strikes program in the country has done nothing to stem the growth of Al-Qaeda, and has even increased support for the terror network.
“Every time there is a drone strike, that’s the best recruiting tool for Al-Qaeda. Killing people in a wedding party, I am sure, will lead to not tens, but probably a hundred people joining Al-Qaeda,” political activist Medea Benjamin told RT. “This guarantees that the cycle of violence will go on in perpetual war.”
However, in August, Yemen requested that the US supply the country with drones in order to help it fight the Al-Qaeda threat.

LAPORAN
yang MENDEDAHKANFBI docs terperinci
PENGAWASAN Drone tanpa Waran . . .
AFP Photo/Robyn Beck (think IN pictures @1WORLDCommunity)
Declassified FBI docs detail Warrantless Drone Surveillance
While previous reports have indicated that the FBI has sought to employ drone technology for years, newly unveiled documents from inside the agency show the extent to which the bureau believes it has the authority to conduct warrantless surveillance.
Growing skepticism over the US foreign drone program and how it may be used in connection with domestic security inspired Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington (CREW) to file suit against the FBI. CREW, using a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, defeated the FBI in court and compelled law enforcement to turn over a database of documents on the growing drone program.
Among that stockpile released earlier this month was an extensive deck of slides titled “Legal Challenges to the Use of UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems).” The slides provide a glimpse into the FBI’s future drone plans, which the bureau clearly hopes will not be impacted by legal restrictions, and will provide instructions for agents who hope to use drones in the field now.
A Justice Department inspector general report published in September indicated that the FBI has been quietly spending millions of dollars to operate a small fleet of unmanned aerial devices in recent years. Then-FBI director Robert Mueller said in June that the bureau was in the “initial stages” of writing privacy policies for its still-developing surveillance policy. However, it was later revealed that the FBI has been using drones in a limited capacity since 2006 - years before experts had previously speculated.
Yang diperolehi slaid pembentangan FBI (The obtained FBI presentation slides - think IN pictures @1WORLDCommunity)
The presentation that surfaced this month opens with a reminder that the FBI operates with “rigorous obedience to the Constitution,” especially the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition of unreasonable search and seizure. Privacy advocates have argued that flying cameras through the air and sweeping up intelligence on unwitting subjects accused of no wrongdoing does constitute an unreasonable search.
The slides also mention the exclusionary rule, a legal principle that renders evidence collected in an unconstitutional manner inadmissible in a court of law.
“FBI counsel seemingly considers this requirement quaint and burdensome,” wrote Vice contributor Shawn Musgrave. “One slide notes an Australian High Court judge’s warning that the American high evidence standard puts it in danger ‘of becoming something of a legal backwater.’ It’s not a great start to a defense of drones’ ‘rigorous’ constitutionality.”
The February 2012 presentation also reminds agents to consider when they are required to obtain a warrant, such as when using a “thermal imager looking through walls” or a “GPS tracker installed on subject’s vehicle.” But perhaps more importantly were the cases which do not require a warrant at all, including surveillance conducted with a “helicopter, airplane (naked eye), or airplane (camera).”

ISRAEL
melepaskan KONTROVERSI Badwi pelan
penempatan semula . . .
Reuters/Mohamad Torokman (think IN pictures @1WORLDCommunity)
ISRAEL defers Controversial Bedouin Relocation plan
Israel is halting a controversial law to relocate 40,000 of Bedouin residents from the Negev Desert in the country’s south. The proposal of the bill sparked accusations of ‘discrimination’ and ‘ethnic cleansing’ from activist groups.
The decision to shelve a controversial Prawer Plan was announce by former cabinet minister Benny Begin, who initially was an author of the plan. Begin revealed at a press conference that he had not approached the Bedouin with the plan and did not receive their [the Bedouin] approval.
“We agreed to promote the bill only because Benny Begin said that he discussed the plan with Bedouin representatives and that it was the only outline they would agree to,” coalition chairman MK Yariv Levin said, but “it was revealed that he [Benny Begin] did not discuss the matter with them [the Bedouins], and did not receive their support.”
“There is no longer a coalition majority supporting the Prawer bill . . . in its present form, because there is no justification to do so," he added. According to Levin the current plan should “undergo vast changes” and “not be presented to the Knesset plenum for the second and third reading in the next few months.”
Begin said he will continue the efforts to improve the Bedouin communities in the Negev. According to him Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu accepted his “recommendation to shelve the plan.”
The groups of Bedouin Arabs were pleased with the announcement. Thabet Abu Rass, the Negev director of Adalah, a group that presses for Arab rights in Israel, hopes “a new plan will be introduced very soon.”
“It’s time for the government to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the Bedouin,” says Abu Rass, “The Bedouins will cooperate; they want to cooperate. The best thing is to work together.”
According to the controversial Prawer Plan, nearly adopted by the Israeli government in November, up to 40,000 Bedouin Arabs were to be removed from their homes in Negev to government-approved towns. The plan also saw the demolition of over 40 villages and confiscation of 70,000 hectares of land.
The plan was based on an effort to “better integrate Israel's Bedouin population into Israeli society,” says the Israeli government. Though the Israeli authorities said the Bedouins would be granted compensation, the plan signaled “systematic discrimination and separation” of Bedouins, according UK-based charity, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
The government has already destroyed the Bedouin village of Araqib in accordance with the plan in August. The Bedouins were offered alternative sites to which to relocate, but they held protests against the state policy.
Still, Israel insisted the plan was aimed to provide basic services that many Bedouins lack as the government has already invested hundreds of millions of dollars in housing, health, public services and education for the Bedouin.
Many of those who opposed the plan offered an alternative to legalize these 35 villages, but government officials said it was impossible because of the villages’ illegal infrastructures.
The Prawer Plan was widely criticized all over the world causing various protests and accusations of ethnic cleansing from many activist groups.
In November, on the international Day of Rage, thousands of people across Israel flooded the streets in protests in both Gaza City and in East Jerusalem. Over 1,200 Bedouin demonstrators came out of the streets in the Negev village of Houra. The same day saw the protests in the UK as people in London, Brighton, Bristol and Cardiff took to the streets to voice against Israeli plans.
The UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People called upon Israeli authorities to abandon the plans to resettle tens of thousands of Bedouin Arabs.
The Palestinians have also condemned Israel’s plans, holding mass demonstrations against the Prawer Plan. The plan was even criticized by some Israeli media which said the Bedouins were “Israel citizens who were granted citizenship in the 1950s.”
The Negev Bedouins are small nomadic Arab tribes in the Negev region of Israel that are traditionally more identified with Israel than their Arab origin. The Bedouin population in the Negev totals over 200,000.
Nearly 90,000 live in 46 villages, 35 of which are still unrecognized by the Israeli government as they were built without basic services such as electricity and running water. The Israeli authorities have gradually taken measures to improve the villages’ infrastructure.
