'Ergenekon' trial ignites clashes between police and supporters of defendants


MADAyuMadyan - Percubaan ‘Ergenekon’ terbakar pertempuran antara polis dan penyokong defendan. Euronews wartawan Bora Bayraktar dilaporkan daripada hampir ke mahkamah di mana berpuluh-puluh diberikan hukuman penjara yang lama untuk rancangan mereka menentang kerajaan.

“Sebagai hukuman dibacakan, polis yang keluarkan semua orang dari sini. Tetapi beratus-ratus penyokong defendan Ergenekon membantah keputusan mahkamah itu, kilometer dari mahkamah”. Masalah telah bru sebelum aturan telah diturunkan dalam salah satu ujian mahkamah politik paling letupan negara telah dilihat dalam tahun-tahun kebelakangan ini.

Apabila pertengkaran tidak dapat dielakkan datang, polis bertindak balas dengan gas pemedih mata dan peluru getah, beterberan penunjuk perasaan kerana mereka lari mencari perlindungan. Di tengah-tengah ketegangan yang semakin meningkat, polis pula yang dihadapi lemparan batu dan terpaksa meriam air untuk memastikan orang ramai di bawah kawalan.

Walaupun larangan protes, serta kawat berduri dan sekatan, beratus-ratus penunjuk perasaan menemui cara mereka melalui bidang di sekitar bangunan mahkamah sehingga mereka telah disekat oleh polis dengan perisai rusuhan.

"As the sentences were read out, the police kept everyone away. But hundreds of supporters of the Ergenekon defendants protested the court's decision, kilometres away from the courtroom". Trouble was brewing even before the verdicts were handed down in one of the most politically explosive court trials the country has seen in recent years.

When the inevitable clashes came, police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, scattering protestors as they ran for cover. Amid escalating tensions, police in turn faced a barrage of rocks and resorted to water cannon to keep the crowds under control.

Despite a protest ban, as well as barbed wire and barricades, hundreds of demonstrators found their way through fields around the courthouse until they were blocked by police with riot shields.
